A stapedectomy treats a type of hearing loss known as otosclerosis. Otosclerosis is caused by the buildup of tiny calcium deposits on the inner ear’s small bones. These calcium deposits can cause stiffness in the middle ear, which prevents sound waves from moving freely through the ear canal. A stapedectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the stiffened bone and replaces it with a prosthetic piece to restore normal hearing. In some cases, a stapedectomy may even be able to reverse some of the hearing loss caused by otosclerosis.
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting and takes one to two hours.
What is the recovery time for Stapedectomy Surgery?
Recovery time varies depending on the patient, but most can return to normal activities within four to six weeks. Patients typically need follow-up visits with their ENT provider to ensure proper healing and a successful procedure. After the procedure, hearing should improve significantly, although some patients may experience minor ringing or tinnitus.
